Abstract:
As part of MSU’s research effort into building radiation tolerant computing systems for aerospace applications, a radiation sensor has been developed to provide environmental awareness to a custom radiation-tolerant flight computer. This sensor is designed to detect the spatial location of radiation strikes with energy levels sufficient to cause single event effects in modern CMOS electronics. These effects are typically due to neutrons, protons, heavy ions, or other high-energy particles. The proposed payload consists of two radiation sensors and an FPGA-based flight computer. The payload will record radiation strikes throughout the duration of the flight as well as monitor the computer system for radiation-induced upsets. This effort follows the Montana State University payload from HASP 2012 and will re-use the electronic hardware developed for that system.
