Abstract:
The Discovery Museum and Planetarium and the University of Bridgeport are engaged in the development of a 2U CubeSat named “DiscoSat”. The Discovery Museum has been granted a NASA launch opportunity planned for 2018. As a project partner, the University of Bridgeport (UB) will design and test the engineering (test/backup) unit of the CubeSat. Once tested, the final flight unit will be built with UB faculty and students and a cohort of precollege students from Museum club/after school programs. The objective of DiscoSat is educational. In particular, young museum visitors will be able to conduct “mission control operations” within the Museum’s Challenger Center where students will learn about satellite missions. DiscoSat will carry a suite of atmospheric sensors (temperature, humidity, light, pressure, radiation) and a directional camera. UB requests a seat on the HASP 2017 flight to test a longer duration flight for the engineering unit for DiscoSat which includes: new software for directional camera calculations and motion in Near Space, the instrument suite, a new structure/housing and enclosure, thermal control, integration of components, command and control. The UB student participants include both undergraduate and graduate students including students from its newly formed Aerospace Club.
