Abstract:
The electrostatic cosmic dust collector (ECDC) experiment aims to secure a position on the high altitude student platform for a long-duration scientific balloon flight in 2017. A newly-developed electrostatic particle collector (EPC) instrument will fly onboard the payload and collect transient passive IDPs through the principle of electrostatic precipitation. The instrument is composed of an array of copper plates charged by a high voltage superimposed by a copper mesh connected to the high voltage converter ground. The EPC will open at an altitude of 120,000ft using an actuated opening mechanism and collect IDPs for the duration of the HASP float altitude flight. The first deployment of an optical dust sensor will provide additional science return by measuring the size and concentration of particle flux in the stratosphere. HASP is the ideal test bed for the development of this new take on an old technology designed to make IDP collection cheaper and as efficient as current collection methods.
