Internship opportunities with NASA (Summer 2009). General: For all these internships a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (out of 4.0) is recommended to be competitive. Some positions require higher GPAs.
NASA internships are only open to U.S. citizens. (Some exceptions are made for the NASA Academies and internships sponsored by Cal Tech.)

• 1. NASA Academy, for student interested in leadership in aerospace-related careers, available at Goddard Space Flight Center, Glenn Research Center, Marshall Research Center, and Ames Research Center.
  Application deadline: January 16, 2009.


• 2. NASA Robotics Academy (NASA Robotics Internship Program) available at Ames Research Center, Marshall Research Center, and Goddard Space Flight Center.
  Application deadline: January 16, 2009.


• 3. Goddard Space Flight Center Internships has many programs (some target specific applicant groups) that are described at. Most share a common application located here. Programs include ACCESS, AIHEC, AISES, APL, IVV, SAWDRIP, SEICA, SIP, SPI, and more! Follow web link above for full-text names and descriptions of the individual programs.
  Application deadline: January 16, 2009.


• 4. Exploration Systems Mission Directorate Internships (ESMD). Internship opportunities at all 10 NASA research centers. Download the Student Information Packet and follow the directions to apply on-line.
  Application deadline for summer internships: February 1, 2009. (Fall and spring semester internships also available, with their own deadlines.)


• 5. Space Grant Internship Program at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Past JPL intern abstracts are posted to give you an idea about the range of projects. The initial application is just a resume and transcript, to be submitted through LaSPACE.
  Application deadline: January 26, 2009 (forwarded to JPL by Jan. 30, 2009) JPL describes their deadline as "flexible" (up to April 1, 2009) but for the best chance at an internship be sure to apply by the original deadline.


• 6. Langley Aerospace Research Summer Scholars (LARSS) at Langley Research Center.
  Application deadline: February 1, 2009.


• 7. Lewis' Educational and Research Collaborative Internship Program (LERCIP) for undergraduates and graduate students at Glenn Research Center.
  Application deadline: January 31, 2009.


• 8. NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program (USRP)
  Application deadline for summer internships: January 23, 2009 (Fall and spring semester internships also available, with their own deadlines.)


• 9. Johnson Space Center (JSC) Space Grant Internship Program Mostly fall and spring semester 15-week internships; some 10-week summer internships available. See flier and application form here

• 10. Cal Tech's Undergraduate Research Programs to learn about Caltech's Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships Program (SURF), Minority Undergraduate Research Fellowships Program (MURF), and other programs. Most of these programs require specific student research proposals; they are not just general applications.
  Deadlines vary: e.g. SURF (Feb. 22, 2009), MURF (Jan. 12, 2009), etc.


• 11. NASA Langley Research Center and Virginia Space Grant Geographic Information Systems (GIS) InternshipNo experience necessary; learn GIS software, Cartography, GPS, etc., while working for the Center.
  Application deadline: February 6, 2009.


• 12. NASA Education Associates Internships and Fellowships for Students and FacultyYear-round opportunities for students and faculty. Two to twelve month commitment.
  Rolling deadlines.


• 13. NASA Graduate Student Researchers Program (GSRP)
  Application deadline: February 1, 2009.
