Topic: First results from the Pierre Auger Observatory – the birth of the hybrid era
Lecturer: Alan Watson
The Pierre Auger Observatory started taking data in January 2004 and has operated more or less continuously ever since. The instruments have now been used to record more events above 1018 eV than were detected in the sum of all previous experiments. As explained in lecture 1, the Observatory uses two independent methods – the ‘hybrid’ technique - to make measurements of events. The first results on arrival direction patterns, on the energy spectrum and on the mass spectrum of the highest energy events have now been reported. I will describe how these results have been obtained and discuss some of the astrophysical implications.
