The description of the basic principles of the most popular mechanism of particle acceleration by astrophysical shocks. The presentation includes the derivation of the equation that describes the transport of charged energetic particles in random magnetic fields frozen in a moving background plasma, the solution of this equation for the cases of particle acceleration by plane and spherical shocks, the consideration of collective effects -- the streaming instability and the hydrodynamic modification produced by the accelerated particles.
